How To: the Perfect Smoothie/Breakfast Bowl in 5 Easy Steps + My RawTill4 Vegan Lifestyle

How's life been?

Has it been crazy so far? It's only been a week of summer and I've done so much already!

I've gone hiking with quality people (whom I very much adore)

And I plan to go with friends tons of more times. By the way, the girl riding her beach cruiser with us in the second pic is http://madiriye.blogspot.com. She is just fab I tell you.

I've been seeing lots of friends lately and I'm so grateful for the lovely hiking opportunities I can experience here in Utah. I guess I've really never appreciated my huge mountain view from my window until now. I love it.

The greatest thing about the start of summer is that I've transitioned into the lovely lifestyle of RawTill4. Pretty self explanatory, right? I'm a raw vegan until four o'clock where I have a cooked dinner.

RawTill4 was created by the amazing Freelee the Banana Girl, and veganism should be highly spread around the whole entire world. Every year in June, from the 1-21, there is a fruitarian festival that celebrates veganism in Chiang Mai, Thailand, held by Freelee and Harley Johnstone. I plan to attend this beautiful festival in at least two years when I've saved up enough money to stay in Thailand for a month tops.

I am vegan for the animals, the world, world peace, my health, and for the quality of living. It is not cheesy (no pun intended). I am a vegan because I want to heal myself and the world at the same time. It is my goal to spread the vegan message.

Many people are uneducated about veganism and health. So many of my dear acquaintances ask me what can I possibly eat? And why would I do this to my body? How do I get in enough vitamins and nutrients that will sustain me over the years?

My response: You can eat anything without an arse. To put it quite frankly.

I live a lifestyle of abundance. I eat when I am hungry and stop when I am full. Not to mention that I am a very very active teen. My skin is glowing and I don't have much acne (which comes from a poor diet). I have amazing blood test results and am glowing within. I get my vitamins and nutrients from plants. Humans aren't built to eat meat. We are not tigers or bears, we are humans. Our bodies thrive off of plant based diets and sustain us for years and years.

The consumption of meat over the past century has surely and noticeably increased very shockingly. So many people are overweight and kids are becoming obese. The U.S. is one of the fattest countries in the whole world. Also, you better count how many diseases have been popping up along with the meaty demand. People die every day because of heart disease and all that terrible stuff, and it can all stop with a healthy diet.

I'm not telling you that I'm better than anyone because I'm vegan. That would make me a narcissistic boob. All I want is for us to treasure the land we live on. Think about it. If there were no humans at all on this planet, the animals would thrive. But if all bees went extinct, then the whole eco-system would shut down and crumble entirely. Humans are the most selfish creatures in the universe, and we are really quite useless. We humans butcher and slaughter the earth's gifts because we think that we can take and not give back.

So I'm starting by giving back to the planet. To the lovely planet I was born into.

And, no. I'm not "killing plants" and all that crap because plants have no nervous systems so therefore I'm not "hurting their feelings and causing them pain" by eating them.
We live in a time where eating animals is optional. Sure, the ice-age people ate meat- but because they had no other option! The cave men would starve if they didn't know how to hunt. But we live in a time where we have the option where we can either harvest strawberries or take young lives away.

If you wouldn't want to kill an animal, then why eat one? Baby piglets have their tails cut off. Baby chicks have their beaks sliced off as well. Do you think any of those workers take time to give them anesthesia? Heck no! And that's not even all.

I'm sure many people, after watching Vegucated, Forks Over Knives, Fed Up, Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead, and even Earthlings, would rethink how they eat.

So carb up! Carbs, when they are natural and not processed, are good for you! Of course potato chips and french fries are crappy for your system and digestion, but steamed potatoes and baked sweet potato fries are super good for you! Fruits do not make you fat. Look at Fully Raw Kristina. Carb up naturally, and your body will thank you by letting you run a good eleven miles straight.

But what do I eat, exactly? I eat tons of fruits during the day and try to stay as raw as possible to follow RawTill4. Of course, I have to be flexible and cannot eat RawTill4 every single day. Sometimes I crave oatmeal for breakfast or want some rice cakes and avocado with hummus for lunch. Traveling also forces you to be flexible as well, because not every vegetarian restaurant has a hearty raw meal for lunch.

I'll do a post on what I eat in a day, but for now, here's an example of what I'm having and what you can have as well for optimal digestion and a healthy mind. Inspirational people on YouTube: Freelee the Banana Girl, FullyRaw KristinaMango Island Mama, & Annie Jaffrey + tons more great people as well.

For breakfast, I usually start my day right with a liter of water. Sometimes I slice up some hydrating fruits [oranges, strawberries, blackberries] and mint and toss them in some water to sit overnight in the fridge. This way, my morning cup of Jo will already be prepared.
After comes breakfast.
Breakfast is usually a bowl of smoothie with some fruit and toppings. Go crazy with toppings. It makes you feel good inside and out. Or I'll skip the bowl and pour the smoothie all in a huge mason jar.

(Usually a workout is after breakfast)
For lunch, I'll either have a mono meal of fruits [oranges, apples and nut butter, bananas, thing of grapes/cherries], or a big bowl of banana ice cream. Being vegan, I have to eat much more because plants have such a high water content and will leave me not feeling satiated enough if I just have two bananas for a meal. Carb up, and work your way up to having six to eight bananas in your #NanaIceCream.

If I'm not having a raw meal for lunch, then I'll nourish myself with some whole wheat crackers and a whole avocado with tomatoes and hummus. Just an example.

After breakfast, dinner is my fave! I love making huge "Nourishing Buddha Bowls"! They're loaded and packed with nutrients that will leave you feeling satisfied and refueled so that you can take a slow cruise on your bike around the neighborhood after dinner. My buddha bowls are filled with macrobiotics. Inspiration through my Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/jenngirlz/a-l-l-i/ (I use my mom's Pinterest and pin to my board because I got so confused how to actually make my own account through my Mac. Hehe)

Now what you've all been waiting for:

How To: the Perfect Smoothie Bowl [RawTill4/FullyRaw] (according to 3 cups worth)
1. Start with the basics: liquid. I encourage you to to try plant-based milk products, such as almond/hemp/oat/coconut/cashew/soy milk. Depending on how many cups you want your smoothie to be and how thick, milk should not take up that much space. I usually make 3 cup smoothies, so I usually do 8 oz. of milk. Do this step first so that the fruit can blend easier.

2. Another basic: frozen fruit. You want this closest to the blade of the blender so there's no chunks in the finished product. Frozen fruit makes your smoothie more smoothie-like, and it's great to freeze fruit so that none of those splotchy papayas on the counter go to waste.
Actually, you can generally freeze any fruit and vegetable, just do it right. For instance, don't freeze a whole frozen banana. Slice it up into chunks. The frozen fruit should take up about 1.5 cups of space in your high speed blender.

3. Fresh fruits and veg: this is where the fresh oranges and handfuls of kale come in! Add in as much as 2/3 of a cup. Also, take it easy on your blender and pour in some fresh cold water. As much as 1/3 C.

4. Anything else? Were you just dying to add in that amazing (and hella expensive) wheatgrass powder you picked up at WF for a green smoothie bowl? Add it in here. Add in any oats, dairy free yogurt, nuts, powders, agave, chia seeds, hemp hearts, cacao, you name it.

5. Pour into a bowl and top off with toppings! My favorite part. Top with coconut shreds, freshly sliced or freeze dried fruit, granola, hemp hearts, nuts, whatever the heck you want. Make it look like there's not a darn smoothie in that bowl, it's so full of toppings!

Still need help? Is this shiz all too complicated? Here's an example of my latest bowl from yesterday.

1. Almond milk
2. Frozen Fiji apple slices and mango and pineapple
3. 2 hoity toity organic spotty and dotty medium-sized bananas and a heaping handful of spinach
4. 1 tsp. of vanilla extract and some vegan protein powder
5. You have eyes, you can see the toppings

Blueberry Fields Forever Pancakes + Mental Health

Health is the best kind of wealth.
Kindness heals.
Friendships mend the heart.

I want to grow up great and strong. Sometimes I hold myself back from all of the opportunities I could take though, and it really stresses me out. I think about all of the 'what ifs', and how things could have been. I worry about not living in the moment because the now is all the while too much to think about. I'm constantly worried.

Am I frigid? I hope not.
Am I boundless? Yes, in my freest moments.
I am constantly thinking too much or too little of something and it drives me nutso. I am a free spirit, I am. Which is why this post is dedicated to mental health and wellness because it is either overrated or not talked about enough.

Mental health and wellness means finding security and safety in your own body [to me]. It involves freeing your mind and healing your soul. It means feeling strong and capable of whatever. I love being healthy. Honestly, sometimes I still do struggle, but I know that those feelings pass. Everybody has those low days. And I remember that those low days will never outnumber the good ones, no matter how exhilarating and exhausting they become.

Let me tell you a secret: I used to lie awake at night and imagine myself totally recovered and free from anxiety. I would imagine myself laying down in a grassy field; the air still and then breezy again; my sundress white and gold and scented with honey spread out around my legs; my hair long, loose, and really beautiful.

I'd imagine a grassy blank canvas: miles and acres of grass, and just grass. I've always loved grass. Ever since I was little I'd hiss and complain about the itch it tingled my toes with. Anyway, I'd imagine running and hopping like a bird; flinging myself onto the dewy earth, like a bird taking flight.
That's how I imagined recovery: like a bird taking flight out into a new world of possibilities and hope that one day, I'd return to the nest confident, like I'd conquered something really good.

And somehow I managed to take flight. I don't know how I did it, but I flew. I became a bird in the metaphorical sense that I can now fly and redeem myself. I can create new hopes and passions because I'm healthy and I honestly never thought I'd get to this point of humility and altruism.

Because now the sky is blue. The sky is really blue even when it's gray sometimes. Because now my hair is thick and my smile is real. Because now the stars in the sky shine bright with victories and memories. Because my world is real and I believe in myself. Because mental health is so important to me.
This is what it means to me to be mentally well.

Now I'm not just mentally healthy, but healthy inside as well! I originally adapted this Blueberry Muffin Pancake recipe from the lovely Minimalist Baker

This pancake stack is bursting with explosions of honey. This whole stack reminds me of a field of wildflowers. The taste is like a real blueberry muffin I kid you not!

I topped the cinnamony pancakes with frozen [black and blue] berries because I didn't have fresh on hand and they were so yummy! Banana coins compliment the bursts of blueberries that weave through the cakes. It's a sweet stack which I also adorned with pumpkin butter. Yumm….

Papaya Boat Parfaits

Papaya boats.
If only I could set sail in a papaya boat and travel 'round the world, then I'd be free from the rust of life! Only thing is, I'd probably eat the papaya boat before I'd even reached a small island. Can't trust me around these.

Also, look at those perfectly rounded and plum, sweet and juicy, lip-smackin' cherries! A bit on the pricey side since it's not officially cherry season yet, but they're great treats for now. I love to squeeze them so they stain the banana ice cream.

This papaya boat reminds me of a beautiful Easter day bathing in a hot sun-soup. I'll be rowing away. The recipe is like a little parfait: half banana ice cream and half greek yogurt. I'm plant based with the exception of greek yogurt and honey. (honey is a very controversial topic in veganism because of the bees, but I'd just prefer to eat it anyway as long as it's not filled with tons of sugars and GMOs)

You'll simply feel refreshed, darling! As long as you stick it in the freezer after assembling for twenty minutes, then any hot rushes will fade away. It's a heavenly treat!!

PAPAYA BOAT PARFAITS (WOO WOO)
*handful of fresh, pitted dark red cherries
*1 holy-guacamole that's huge(!) papaya- very ripe and juicy
*1 T of almond butter
*1 tsp. of cacao nibs
*3 frozen, spotty-dotty ripe bananas, chopped
*maca powder (optional, but highly recommended bc of extra nutrients and a fine caramel taste)

HOW TO:
1. blitz the frozen banana, almond butter, and optional maca powder
2. slice open a papaya in 2 and fill with banana ice cream
3. top with said toppings
4. enjoy lovelies!

Strawberry Fields Forever Whole Wheat Pancakes

As the light streamed through my window this morning, through the slivering cracks of the blinds, I knew that today was going to be filled with much appreciation and lovely food.

It took me a while to fully awake from my sweet dreams of my friends and I skipping through a shower of sprinklers in my backyard. Clad in our best swimsuits, me in my lavender and blue bandeau bikini and my friends in their halter tops, their triangle swimwear, and flip flops, I was having a glorious time.

My gang and I have a special name for the group: the Unholy Trinity plus one. We're a gang of squabbling, awkward, special girls. We are loud, wild, free-spirited, and the bee's knees.

I'm more than blessed to have them. I fantasize us riding along somewhere in the heart of the US in a bubble-gum pink Chevrolet convertible, yapping about whatever. I imagine always keeping in touch, even if I'm halfway across the world tasting some exotic jasmine tea.

I'm celebrating Easter without them this year. We always dye Easter eggs, no matter how old we become. One best friend is swimming in the Maldives. Lucky ducky! One day we'll travel 'round the world together.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that I really love them, my Unholy Trinity friends. And the next time we're all together again, then these pancakes will be first on the list to make!

Late last night, around 22:30 on the hour, I felt this overwhelming surge to create something creamy and dreamy and decadent. After scouring the web and redesigning my blog (FOR THE LAST TIME) and adding a Pin It Button (which you should totally do, pin some of my recipes please!), I created some strawberry fairy cakes in pancake form.

It's safe to say that I like to use a lot of different filters for my pictures.

After much deliberation and listening to some good 'ol Enya songs to get my creative mind working, I decided I'd create another one of my own pancake stack.

A dash of cinnamon here, some baking powder there and a hearty scoop of white whole wheat flour, and you're off to the races!

Be prepared for a delicate and creamy, uber fluffy stack which makes eleven 6" pancakes! In these pictures, I only used six and froze the other five for later. (or tomorrow- depends how antsy I get for pancakes!)

HEALTHY WW STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER PANCAKES:
*1/3 C of oat flour (either buy it store-bought or save money and blitz oatmeal up in a blender)
*1/2 C of white whole wheat flour (I used Trader Joe's)
*1/2 C of any non-dairy milk mixed with a T of lemon juice for a vegan buttermilk
*diced strawberries mixed with honey or agave
*2 tsp. baking powder and cinnamon each
*vanilla extract, about 1 tsp.
*1 mashed banana
*1 flax egg for a vegan substitute, or just use one egg
*2 T plain Greek yogurt (or use coconut yogurt for a non-dairy sub)

DIRECTIONS:
1. make your flax egg and buttermilk and store them in the fridge for about 5-10 minutes to thicken up
2. mash the banana (it better be spotty dotty and super ripe with black spots all over it fora  natural sweetener)
3. stire the banana with the flours, baking powder, yogurt and milk
4. whisk in the flax egg and the other ingredients
5. flip your pancakes and top with tons of fruit, nuts, and nut butters with some pure maple syrup! ENJOY!

Where Alli Has Been + a Soothing Summer Strawberry Smoothie Bowl

  I'm back, friends!
I've really missed blogging, but have honestly been either too busy or lazy or just not in the mood to type away into oblivion. Whoops. Sorry folks (not that anyway has been following lately)

I've been away for what seems like so long- three months. I'm gonna try to pin my photos on Pinterest to share more of my recipes. I've got 3,000 viewers as of now which is so lovely and incredible.

I took a trip to Walt DisneyWorld in Florida for spring break a few weeks ago and most of the trip was spectacular. The world really is a carousel of color.
Me and my sisters went on almost all of the roller coasters. Even if I did have to drag half their butts on to the rides, it was worth the the pictures that were taken mid-coaster. I'll never forget how much Audrie's face looked like a llama in one of them.

Of course, being the sweetie-pie girls, we all had to have our fair share of the Dole whips served in Adventureland, Magic Kingdom. Wouldn't it just be so incredible to own a little food shop with the address to Magic Kingdom? I think I'd melt.
(you can check out my magical pictures on my instagram)

I bet y'all don't really care about any more pictures, and I certainly would be scrolling down to the end of the page just for the recipe if it were me. Psshh… Creative writing? Please, just show me the sweet stuff.
Refreshing.
Sweet.
Bursting with flavor.
Filling.
Stained with cherry juice.
Crunchy with cacao nibs and coconut chips.
Plush with every nectarine bite; so juicy you need to eat it over the sink when super ripe!

I love breakfasts. I adore the groggy warm summer mornings when I roll out of bed to open my blinds and curtains at 7 am to find that the sun is just peeking behind the vivid blue mountains. I dream of cracking my window open, with the pungent smell of oranges simmering through the air.

And the air is not stiff and chilled with frost from the mountains which are like bundt cakes smothered in cream cheese frosting, just waiting to be demolished. No; the air in the summer is warm and scented. I live off of scents and sounds. I can smell the mist of the sprinklers going off at exactly 9:00 on the hour and how the sweet dew reminds me of my grandmother's garden: cherishing, refreshing, crisp.

The smell of wild bee pollen and the rumbling and bumbling of those busy-bodied insects. I love the sound of them; in those moments when I am outside alone, their bumbling reassures me that I'm not the only one with sass. I can hum any rhythm I'd like to with those bees because I know they'll always keep me at ease.

Anyway, back to the groggy summer mornings, my favorite things to do are the simplest things I can do. I just adore stumbling downstairs to my kitchen with my bear slippers smacking around the tile, me shuffling about rummaging through the pantry for this certain granola or this certain kind of almond milk. I just love it. And I relish in relaxing outside on my patio in my backyard listening to Enya whilst figuring out a way to slurp down a 32 oz. smoothie from a bowl.

Spring has just barely dug its roots in. I won't let it go now, even if there was some frost on the tip of the mountains yesterday (Ehh… What can I expect from Utah? It even powdered one day in July!).

My smoothie bowl regenerated me from the zombie state I was in the winter time. I swear to you, I'm moving somewhere super tropical and lush when I retire. Of course I'll already be living somewhere warm and misty, like California. But for my Golden Years, I've got a huge bucket list me and my future varicose veins and perm-like hair will have to bust through. I imagine myself also driving a bubble-gum pink Chevrolet convertible. Here's the thing: my Golden Years will be brilliant, I won't let my marbles go all at once. But, that's like, sixty years away from now so I should start saving up for that Chevrolet in fifty. I'll save up for a modernized car for now.

I felt revived and energized, even if this bowl was a quarter of the smoothie bowl that the recipe provides. Trust. Take the extra fifteen minutes in those future groggy summer mornings. You'll feel better than ever and plus, you can figure out so many different ways to try and slurp down the smoothie from a bowl. I suggest adding less liquid for a thicker consistency.

'HALLELUJAH I'VE BEEN SAVED BY THE FROSTY CHILLY CRAP' BOWL
Ingredients:
1 frozen banana
a squeeze of both lemon and orange juice
3/4 C coconut milk
spoonful of almond butter
ice
strawberzz
vanilla beans
3 baby oranges
scoop of love for the summer (*you can use some hemp or whey protein powder if you desire to do so)

DIRECTIONS:
1. Blitz all of these lovely ingredients into a blender, such as a Blendtec. It's so much easier using a high speed blender for the consistency and so all of the fruits are blitzed up really fine. Add the liquids first, the fresh fruit second, and the frozen stuff in last. This helps your blender blitz everything up better.
2. Pour into a bowl and obviously top with a mountain of toppings. Top it with: almond butter, cherries and cherry juice squeezed to stain the sliced nectarines, fresh organic strawberries, desiccated coconut and cacao nibs, and some almond butter drizzle.
3. Eat this baby up and savor it, don't just guzzle it down because it's so pretty that of course you'll want to eat it up all in one bite, but that's going to hurt your tummy and the pretty display. Be vain when it comes to food picture taking. Be very vain.
But don't be vain enough where you poach these beautifully majestic White Rhinos. They are being poached for their horns because apparently they're cool souvenirs? What's even crazier is that the horns on top of their heads are made from the same stuff that makes up our hair and nails. That's pretty crazy- insane, actually. Don't do it. Save these babies.

Pitaya Plus Packages & Papaya Dragon-Fruit Banana ice-cream Boats!! (vegan, gluten free, dairy-free, vegetarian, yummy)

Isn't it just so crazy how some people can get hurt and battered and the world will just go on? Everyone has a place in the world. Whether your'e from New Zealand or Arizona, you might just end up anywhere in this compulsive, dynamic planet.

I'm going to end up somewhere safe, I hope. That's at least what I keep telling myself everyday. I don't want to think about heart-breaks and heart-aches; the feeling of freedom sends me over the moon and over the edge of excitement and wonder for what'll happen when I'm 29, or even when I'm 15 or 72.

And even in those moments where I'll be hurt and broken, the world will just keep on spinning. The world does not revolve around me.

I'm one out of 7 billion, but I'm also an individual with a set goal in mind to be one in a thousand, or one in a hundred, or even one in ten. I strive to feel free in this big city I live in. I want to feel successful when I'm 93, when I'm warm and cozy in my bed ready for life to come challenge me.

I'm going to make it all count. I'm going to only regret the pictures I didn't take because every moment is a precious moment, and you can't take any special memories back even when you might wish you could.

I have a set goal in life: to travel the world. I'll start from the bottom and go from there. (Except not Antarctica) I long to learn about different cultures and people because the world is not Sandy, Ut. The world is a fresh blend of different cultures, religions, living human beings who should all count, exotic animals, mixes of different foods, smiles, death, rebirth…. the list can go on forever.

The reason why I want to travel the world so bad is so I can understand people better. Everybody has a story to tell. Everybody has a life to live and a goal to achieve. I wish to interact and help people in need too. I want to give my big heart a chance to do its job.

I want to live.

2015, come at me! I'm ready to live, and I wasn't sure if I really wanted to before, but now I've got a set goal in life. I've got a bucket list filled with places I want to travel to, recipes, and much more motivational goals. I'll start now.

I really wanted to try some pink dragon fruit, and I've had the white dragon fruit before, but it just wasn't as… Well, it was a disappointment. I've just now learned that the white dragon fruit doesn't have as much vitamins as the pink ones, although they are still jam-packed with loads of fiber, vitamin B, and magnesium!

The pink ones that are the pitaya plus packages are frozen smoothie packs. They taste so amazing, like a mix between a strawberry and a kiwi fruit with its texture and flavor. It also tastes like a blend of pineapple and pears… YUM!

I opted to make the pitaya/dragon fruit into some banana ice cream, as it would be a perfect treat in a papaya dream boat! Ready, set, go!

With a blend of coconutty, citrusy, and sharp and sweet flavors, this meal is a perfect one for a hot day outside. Paired with the papaya, there's something so magical and so Disney-like that makes me feel like I could jump up-and-down a million miles a day forever! (JK, more like jump up-and-down once or twice, and make the whole thing again to devour eat)

PAPAYA DRAGON-FRUIT NANA ICE CREAM BOATS:
*1/2-1 whole pink pitaya/dragon fruit pitaya plus smoothie pack, or 1 fresh pink dragon fruit/pitaya
*1 frozen spotty-dotty banana
*5 huge frozen strawberries
*1 baby clementine
*2 ice cubes
*some vanilla, lime juice, and vegan vanilla protein powder
*1/2 of a ripe and juicy, sweet medium organic papaya
DIRECTIONS:
1. in a high-speed blender or food processor, blend the banana, strawberries, and pitaya together.
2. pulse in the rest of the ingredients and let chill for about 30 minutes in the freezer
3. while the nana ice-cream is chilling, slice a medium papaya in half and scoop out the icky seeds
4. after chilling, scoop out the banana ice cream into the papaya boat and top with delicious plant-based ingredients [coconut flakes, desiccated coconut, cacao nibs, 88% dark chocolate, drizzle of honey, frozen berries, nuts, seeds, basically anything your heart desires]

XOXO, ALLI JENN
